#AIN2018 Paris FAQ

Before contacting the AIN Conference team (conference@appliedimprovisationnetwork.org), please have a look at our FAQ to see if your query is answered here.

#AIN2018 Conference Overview

What is the AIN Conference? Do I need any experience of improvisation or applied improvisation to attend?

The Applied Improvisation Network (AIN) world conference gathers diverse people together who share the view that the principles, skills and tools of improvisation are valuable, even crucial for personal, business and planetary well-being. We come together to explore and share our ideas and effective practices to help us all achieve our goals.

This year we will celebrate DiverseCity in Paris, as we see the City of Love as inspiration for AINers. We will be looking at the various areas, or “niches” (such as business, personal growth and education) where we do our work, and how those niches influence our approach.

We begin this exploration at the free AIN Orientation on the 23rd August 2018. It will continue throughout the AINx Talks, the Workshop sessions, and undoubtedly some of the Open Space sessions. This year we also want to create new formats, so there may be some surprises!

On the last day of the conference, we will break out into niche groups to discuss challenges and solutions. Preceding these breakout sessions will be a panel of experienced AINers, leaders in these fields, talking about the target markets and specific opportunities.

This Conference is a unique opportunity for leaders in their field as well as newcomers to Applied Improvisation. Everyone is welcome.

How do I best get to Paris?

Paris is reachable from all most major French airports and train stations. It all depends on your company and origin of your flight.

AIRPORTS

All informations regarding Paris Airports, combining 2 major airports can be found here:

Paris Charles de Gaulle
Paris Orly

Both airports can be reached by public transportation (several options each), taxi or by car.
There is one other minor Airport: Beauvais

For public transportation, please refer to our recommendations regarding a direct journey to the AIN Conference location.

We also suggest you use the website ratp.fr (public transport operator for Paris & suburbs).

Paris Orly (ORY)

You can buy your tickets directly onboard, or at ticket machines in the station: 9,20€ one way. You can also book online here. The journey lasts ~20-40 min depending on traffic (but the dedicated bus service below remains the easiest public transport for this route).

From Paris ORY Airport to AIN Conference location :

  • Orlybus at Airport towards station “Alésia René Coty”
  • 6min walk to the AIN Conference location
  • Not the same station name if you take the bus one way or the other, because of some one-way roads in Center Paris

From AIN Conference location to Paris ORY Airport:

  • Orlybus from station “Dareau – Saint-Jacques”
  • 3 min walk from AIN Conference location
  • Not the same station name if you take the bus one way or the other, because of some one-way roads in Center Paris

Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulles (CDG)

You can buy your ticket directly onboard, or at ticket machines in the stations: 11,40€ one way. You can also book online here. The journey lasts 1h+ depending which terminal you arrive (not including the walking period inside the airport)

From Paris CDG Airport to AIN Conference location :

  • Follow “Paris by train” at the airport. The train you will take is called “RER B”.
  • ~45 min from your terminal to the station “Denfert Rochereau”
  • ~15 min walk to AIN Conference location
  • also possible to take urban bus N°88 from “Denfert Rochereau” to station “Dareau – René Coty”, 5 min walk remaining

From AIN Conference location to Paris CDG Airport:

  • ~15 min walk to AIN Conference location
  • also possible to take urban bus N°88 from “Dareau – René Coty” to satation “Denfert Rochereau – Froideveaux”
  • Take RER B direction “Aéroport Charles de Gaulle”
  • ~45 min to your terminal (please consider another 15 min to go the the right place inside the airport)

Paris Beauvais (BVA)

Please consider that this airport is further away from Paris than the two others. There is only a private shuttle journey straight to the centre without any stops: 29€/adult for way & return. You can book online here. The journey lasts ~1h15 between Paris-Beauvais airport and the bus park at Boulevard Pershing, at the level of the Porte Maillot, in Paris.

For taxi
There is a fixed price from airports to Center Paris (“left bank” for AIN Conference location, or “right bank” for some other parts of Paris), that must be applied by official taxis.

From Paris ORY: 30€
From Paris CDG: 55€

We suggest you to use the website ratp.fr (public transport operator for Paris & suburbs) in order to define your journeys from your train station to AIN Conference location.

BY CAR

If you are driving in Paris or have a car to use or share in the area, please be aware that the journey from one place to another can take twice the time allocated if there are some traffic issues, so budget your time accordingly. We highly recommend using directional Apps (especially WAZE as it gives directions and accounts for traffic conditions) or GPS systems.

All major rental car agencies are onsite at the airports, and also in the center of Paris.

Please note that hotel parking fees are NOT included in the room rates, and that it is not easy & not free to park in the streets. There are several private parking lots that you can use, but they can be quite expensive (up to 40€/day).

How do I best get around in Paris?

DRIVE YOURSELF / CARPOOL

There is no special need for a car if you stay in Paris or in the direct suburbs. Distances in France are not as large as in some other countries, like in the US for instance.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Paris’ public transportation is highly developed. Pretty much any tourist location inside Paris and even in the suburbs (Versailles for instance) can be reached by public transport.

We suggest you to use the website ratp.fr (public transport operator for Paris & suburbs) in order to plan your journeys.

The AIN Conference location is in the center of Paris, so surrounded with public transport options, as you can see on the extract of the district map hereunder 🙂

RIDE SHARE SERVICES

Mobile app-based services:

The following two ride services are connected to Apps that you need to download and create an account to access. A brief online search can show first-time user discounts.

Uberhttps://www.chauffeur-prive.com/
Marcelwww.marcel.cab

Taxi service:

Several companies work in Paris, as well as individuals.

Due to the richness of the public transportation offer, the taxi service is also well developed, but not as much as in some US cities. Taxis can also be hard to find especially at rush hour or early in the morning. Your best bet is to find a taxi rank (station de taxis, marked with a blue sign) on major roads, crossroads and at stations. A white or green light on a taxi’s roof indicates the car is free; an orange light means the cab is busy.

Fares:

  • There is a service charge of €4.
  • The rates are then based on zone and time of day. Official taxis (TAXI light on the roof) have a dedicated box that provides the view on the cost as you travel. Most journeys in central Paris cost €8-€16; there’s a minimum charge of €7.10.
  • Most drivers will not take more than three people, although they should take a couple and two children. Anyway, there is an additional charge of €4 for a fifth passenger (child or adult).
  • Paris taxi drivers are not known for their flawless knowledge of the Paris street map; if you have a preferred route, say so.
  • Don’t feel obliged to tip, although rounding up to the nearest euro is polite. Taxis are not allowed to refuse rides if they deem them too short and can only refuse to take you in a certain direction during their last half-hour of service (both rules are often ignored).
  • If you want a receipt, ask for “un reçu” or “la note”.

These firms take phone bookings 24/7; you also pay for the time it takes your taxi to reach you. If you wish to pay by credit card, mention this when you order.

At this stage, we cannot offer any discounts to AIN Conference volunteers. We cannot offer any discounts to presenters at the AIN Conferences.

AIN Conference Scholarship:

We want to encourage applied improvisers from diverse backgrounds to attend the AIN 2018 World Conference.  If you are able, please make a small donation towards a conference scholarship on your AIN Conference Registration Form to encourage and support this. The conference schedule is subject to change without notice and we will attempt to keep you updated.

#AIN2018 Conference Scholarship

Conference Scholarship Applications

APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY May 25, 2018. Award recipients will be notified by mid-June, 2018. (Subsequent awards may be possible if additional funds are donated.)

The theme for the AIN2018 Paris Conference is DiverseCity.
Diversity reflects all the ways in which people differ, encompassing the different characteristics that make one individual or social group different from another. Diversity often references our differences based on thing such as race, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, nationality, religion, socioeconomic status, and education. It can also reflect a vast array of individual differences (e.g. personality, language, learning styles, and life experiences).

The scholarship funds:

In 2017, we offered our first scholarship to help make it possible to support the attendance of one person to the conference. This year, we are pleased to, once again, offer scholarship funds to support conference attendance.

Our scholarship goals are twofold:

– to increase inclusion and diversity in our practitioner community
– to support an individual with financial need

Please note that:
– The number of recipients is limited (Last year, our first for offering scholarships, there was one Scholarship Honoree).
The amount awarded may be partial or full scholarship (conference registration valued at €520 early bird rate). Some stipend toward lodging may be awarded depending on the amount of funds raised. (Lodging costs range from €45- €75 per night.)
– Funds are used for registration for the AIN Paris 2018 Conference.
– This scholarship opportunity may vary from year to year.
– For those attending a conference for the first time, scholarship recipients will be paired with an AIN member who can be available to answer questions and provide introductions to other members.

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA:

We are looking for candidates that meet some or all of the following criteria:
* Increase diversity:
– an applied improviser from a geographically under-represented region of the world at the AIN Conference
– an individual who is a part of an underrepresented group from any country… (persons of color, varying age groups, members of the LGBQT community, individuals with disabilities, retired military, veterans, those who are socio-economically challenged, individuals from diverse religions, gender identification, etc.)

* Financial needs:
– Individuals who have financial needs, and would not be able to attend the conference due to lack of funds.
– Someone who will benefit from either a full-scholarship of the registration costs or a partial-scholarship to offset their conference costs

If you have any questions or concerns mid-process, feel free to e-mail our team at conference@appliedimprovisationnetwork.org. We will respond to you as soon as we are able.

#AIN2018 Conference Accommodation

Staying on FIAP site

Please note that the cost for housing is NOT included in the Conference Registration Fee.

As we are getting closer to the August conference in Paris, we have re-negotiated with our venue, FIAP, to keep bedrooms available for us as long as possible.

To be sure of getting your room at FIAP, please register for the conference and book that room before 30th May 2018.

From 30th May onwards, there will be a limited number of rooms available on a first-come-first-serve basis and we will no longer be able to guarantee your preferred option.

If you stay on the FIAP campus, you will easily walk to almost all of the conference events, as they will take place in the same building. You can reserve and pay for housing at the AIN Conference location (FIAP) together with your conference registration, from Monday the 20th to Sunday the 26th, enjoying the special AIN price. If you need to stay longer, you can book extra days directly through FIAP, and contact us to try to have the same room (but at regular price).

There are different accommodation options at FIAP. You can watch a video tour here, and additional information can be found here at FIAP housing.

  • Bedrooms with two twin beds (bedding included) in each + bathrooms (shower & toilet) ensuite + breakfast included =
    • Booked for 1 person (privatised) : 75€, per night
    • Booked for 2 people : 50€, per night
  • Bedrooms with 4 beds (bedding included) in each + bathroom (shower & toilet) ensuite + breakfast included = 40€, per night

If you are going to share your room, please give us the name of your roommate(s) on the registration form, AND ask them to do the same.

Please note that at times the prices for bedrooms on the FIAP website can be slightly lower than the prices on the AIN registration form. This is due to the following:

  • With AIN we have a fixed price for the whole registration period, while FIAP’s pricing is dynamic, meaning that their prices change depending on demand and are likely to increase as time goes on.
  • When you book through AIN, you will be allocated a room in the new area of FIAP which has recently been renovated and you will be grouped together with other AIN rooms. Booking with FIAP will not guarantee this.
  • When you book through AIN as a solo traveller, you can book a single bed in a 2 or 4 person’s room and let us know whom you’d like to share with. If you book through FIAP you will need to pay the full price of the room, make your own arrangements to share and later get reimbursed by your roommates.

If you need more time to make this decision, you can register without the lodging now, and contact Linda Briand (briant@fiap.fr) with an email titled: AIN Conference [Your Name as is on the registration form].

What are the off-site accommodation options?

Please note that the cost for housing and breakfast is NOT included in the Conference Registration Fee.

If you choose to stay off-site you will need to make these arrangements yourself, outside of our registration system. For your convenience, we suggest the closest hotel from the AIN Conference location (5min walk)

Paris Mariott Rive Gauche Hotel
17, boulevard Saint-Jacques,
Paris 75014
France

Room from 156€ per night, you can check & book on the website.

We gently remind you that if you stay off-site, only lunch, coffee and dinner are available as part of the conference package.

Other Options / Short-term rentals:

AirBnB – a community marketplace for people to discover and book unique accommodations around the world — online or from a mobile phone or tablet.

CouchSurfing.com – Stay with hosts for free, usually in exchange for also hosting others on your “couch” for free.  Possibly worth consideration for the extremely budget conscious traveler.  Learn More – CouchSurfing vs Airbnb

Again, keep in mind, we would highly recommend staying close to location of your destination.

We gently remind you that if you stay off-site, only lunch, coffee and dinner are available as part of the conference package.

#AIN2018 Conference Programme

Where can I find the conference schedule?

A conference schedule will be made available as soon as possible. Please keep an eye on the website and we thank you for your patience.

The conference schedule is subject to change without notice and we will attempt to keep you updated.

What kind of sessions/activities can I expect there to be at the AIN Conference?

Every AIN Conference includes main elements such as plenary sessions, workshops, TED style talks, and Open Space. This year we will also have an expert panel as well as a French debate. The evenings will be filled with entertainment options and there will also be plenty of time and space to relax, network, and re-energize.

I would like to present at the AIN Conference. Can I submit a proposal?

Yes, everyone is welcome to submit a proposal for a workshop, talk, panel, debate or Open Space session at the conference.

Our call for proposals can be found here. Please provide as much detail as possible about your session.

You will be notified of whether your talk or workshop are accepted by June 1-15th.

Please note that everyone can present at the conference – we have several Open Space sessions available for individuals to present 30, 60, or 90 minute presentations. These Open Space sessions will be announced, scheduled and coordinated during and as part of the AIN Conference on Friday, 24 August 2018.

What is Open Space?

The Open Space is the most improvisational part of the conference. We will start with an Open Space opening plenary on Friday where all conference attendees are invited to pitch a session which they have either planned in advance or come up with on the day itself. They can be anything from a masterclass to an informal chat and stroll through the city. All sessions will then be added to a schedule grid and will take place in a designated space and time during the conference.

Learning Journeys

Learning Journeys Overview

What are the AIN Learning Journeys?

The AIN Learning Journeys are full-day explorations into a specific topic which take place before the main conference. The format will be one of the following:

‘We Learn from Paris’ – we visit places where you learn things you can take home and apply to your practice of applied improvisation. This is the historic Learning Journey model, where we observe how AI is being used currently.

‘Paris Learns from Us’ – we visit places where we can share and evangelize the value of Applied Improvisation. This option would require Applied Improvisation practitioners volunteering to demonstrate their specialties in different settings and can be considered a Hybrid option as applied improvisers can learn from one another.

Do I need any previous experience to attend?

No previous experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome.

When & Where will the AIN Learning Journeys be held (date, time, location)?

Each AIN Learning Journey will be on the date and venue denoted on the Learning Journeys webpage. The specific details of time and travel to the venues will be dependent on the specific Learning Journey. Plan for a full-day experience from tentatively 9am – 5pm, but the time may shift slightly based upon the needs of the experience. Specific details will be sent to you after you enrol in your experience

Day 1: Wednesday 22nd of august 2018
